Abstract
Understanding mathematical concepts is a fundamental skill that must be learned and has a significant impact on the achievement of other mathematics learning objectives. However, based on the results of observations and preliminary tests that have been conducted, there are still students who have not fully grasped the mathematical concepts they have studied. This is due to instruction that remains teacher-centered and tends to rely on rote memorization, as well as the failure to implement learning models in the instructional process. Therefore, there is a need for varied learning models that can actively engage students, namely the Picture-and-Picture model and the Example-Non-Example model. This study aims to determine students’ understanding of mathematical concepts taught using the Picture-and-Picture and Example-Non-Example models at SDN Mustika Jaya VI, to identify differences in mathematical concept understanding between the Picture-and-Picture and Example-Non-Example models, and to assess the effectiveness of both models. The research method used was an experiment with a quasi-experimental design of the nonequivalent control group type. The sampling technique employed was simple random sampling. The sample in this study consisted of two classes: Experimental Class 1, which used the Picture-and-Picture model, and Experimental Class 2, which used the Example-Non-Example model. Data collection was conducted through written tests, namely a pre-test and a post-test. Data analysis was performed using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney hypothesis test and the N-Gain test. The results of the study indicate that there is no significant difference between the two models. This is evidenced by the students’ mean pre-test and post-test scores, which were not significantly different, and confirmed by the Mann-Whitney test result with a p-value of 0.467 > 0.05. This is supported by the fact that the average N-Gain Score for Experimental Class 1 was 44.7%, falling into the “less effective” category, and the average N-Gain Score for Experimental Class 2 was 39.2%, falling into the “ineffective” category. The conclusion of this study is that there is no significant difference in the conceptual understanding of students using the Picture And Picture learning model compared to that of students using the Example-Non-Example model in third-grade mathematics at SDN Mustika Jaya VI.
