Abstract

First-year university students face various challenges that may affect their sense of belonging. A low sense of belonging can lead to social isolation, stress, decreased academic motivation, and an increased risk of dropout. This study aimed to examine the influence of peer support and gratitude on the sense of belonging among first-year students at University X. Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 300 first-year students selected through stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the Sense of Belonging Instrument (SOBI; α = 0,901), a peer support scale (α = 0,927), and the Gratitude Questionnaire–Six Item Form (GQ-6; α = 0,858), which had been adapted to the Indonesian context. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s Rho correlation and multiple regression analyses. The results revealed significant positive relationships between peer support and sense of belonging (r = 0,747; p = 0,000, p < 0,05) and between gratitude and sense of belonging (r = 0,615; p = 0,000, p < 0,05). Peer support and gratitude significantly predicted sense of belonging (Adjusted R² = 0,584; F = 210,644; p = 0,000, p < 0,05), explaining 58.4% of the variance.
