Abstract

Abstrak Candi Jiwa merupakan salah satu peninggalan arkeologi bercorak Hindu-Buddha yang berada di Kawasan Percandian Batujaya, Kabupaten Karawang, Jawa Barat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji sejarah dan fungsi religius Candi Jiwa pada masa lampau, penggunaan batu bata merah sebagai material utama bangunan, serta dampak keberadaan candi terhadap kehidupan sosial dan budaya masyarakat sekitar. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi lapangan, wawancara mendalam, dan studi pustaka. Keabsahan data diperoleh melalui teknik triangulasi data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Candi Jiwa berfungsi sebagai pusat aktivitas religius dan spiritual pada masa Hindu-Buddha. Penggunaan batu bata merah mencerminkan bentuk adaptasi masyarakat terhadap kondisi lingkungan pesisir Batujaya. Keberadaan Candi Jiwa hingga saat ini turut berperan dalam membentuk nilai toleransi, gotong royong, serta kesadaran budaya masyarakat setempat. Abstract Candi Jiwa is one of the Hindu-Buddhist archaeological remains located in the Batujaya Temple Complex, Karawang Regency, West Java. This study aims to examine the historical and religious functions of Candi Jiwa in the past, the use of red bricks as the main construction material, and the impact of the temple’s existence on the social and cultural life of the surrounding community. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques including field observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. Data validity was ensured through data triangulation techniques. The results indicate that Candi Jiwa functioned as a center of religious and spiritual activities during the Hindu-Buddhist period. The use of red bricks reflects the community’s adaptation to the coastal environmental conditions of Batujaya. Furthermore, the existence of Candi Jiwa has contributed to the development of tolerance, mutual cooperation, and cultural awareness among the local community.
