Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of pressure and blasting time variations on the surface roughness of SS400 steel during the sandblasting process. The primary objectives are to determine the influence of spray pressure and blasting time on surface roughness and to identify the optimal parameter settings to achieve the desired surface characteristics. The research employs the Taguchi method to systematically evaluate the influence of different parameter combinations and to enhance process efficiency. Experimental results reveal that the highest surface roughness value, 0.54 µm, was obtained at a spray pressure of 6 bar and a blasting time of 20 seconds. In contrast, the lowest surface roughness value, 0.24 µm, was achieved at a pressure of 5 bar and a blasting time of 10 seconds. Statistical analysis indicates that among the two variables tested, blasting time has the most significant effect on the resulting surface roughness. Furthermore, the study aims to meet an optimal surface roughness target within the range of 30 µm to 85 µm, which is commonly required for surface preparation standards. The combination of 6 bar pressure and 20 seconds of blasting time produced a surface roughness value of 0.54 µm with a surface cleanliness level of SA 3, which is considered optimal in terms of both roughness and cleanliness criteria. These findings provide valuable insights for the selection of sandblasting parameters, contributing to improved quality control and process optimization in industrial surface treatment applications.
