Abstract

In everyday life, students usually use non-formal language in communication. When communicating with peers, they often use harsh words that can be referred to as sarcasm. Usually sarcasm is used in the context of humor, but it can also hurt someone's feelings. The purpose of this study is to find out the motives behind students in using sarcasm, as well as feedback or responses arising from the use of sarcasm by students of Universitas Islam 45 Bekasi. This research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. The theory used is phenomenology theory. The results of this study found several motives that can influence students such as emotion, disappointment, spontaneity, joking, age, gender, social distance, place of residence, and education. The feedback or response arising from the use of sarcasm includes positive responses such as the expected reaction and responding well to sarcasm utterances, and one of the negative responses such as expressions of non-acceptance that lead to disputes.
