Abstract

Loneliness is a psychological condition resulting from unmet social relationship needs. This study aimed to determine the relationship between perceptions of AI chatbots as companions and social connectedness with loneliness among university students. This study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 357 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Chatbots as Social Companionships scale (CASC-S), the Social Connectedness Scale-Revised (SCS-R), and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3. Instrument reliability coefficients were 0.953, 0.921, and 0.940, respectively. Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation and multiple linear regression. The results showed a significant positive relationship between perceptions of AI chatbot companionship and loneliness (r = 0.339; p = 0.000) and a significant negative relationship between social connectedness and loneliness (r = -0.660; p = 0.000). Simultaneously, both variables contributed 45.9% to loneliness (R² = 0.459; p = 0.000).
