Abstract

Social anxiety is one of the problems that can affect an individual's ability to interact with their social environment. Social comparison and self-esteem are factors that are presumed to influence social anxiety. This study aimed to examine the effect of social comparison and self-esteem on social anxiety among students of Vocational High School (SMK) X in Bekasi City. The participants were students in grades X and XI. This study employed a probability sampling method using a cluster sampling technique, resulting in a sample of 223 respondents. The research instruments demonstrated high reliability, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.884 for the Social Comparison Scale, 0.925 for the Self-Esteem Scale, and 0.931 for the Social Anxiety Scale. The results showed a significant positive relationship between social comparison and social anxiety (r = 0.343, p = 0.000), as well as a significant negative relationship between self-esteem and social anxiety (r = -0.434, p = 0.000). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that social comparison and self-esteem significantly influenced social anxiety (F = 33.188, p = 0.000). The correlation coefficient was R = 0.481, with a coefficient of determination of R² = 0.232, indicating that social comparison and self-esteem jointly explained 23.2% of the variance in social anxiety among students of Vocational High School (SMK) X in Bekasi City.
