Abstract

With the advancement of communication technology, social media has become an essential platform for individuals to express themselves and interact digitally. Along with the development of high levels of social media use, self-disclosure can also be done through social media. With this social media, individuals can communicate and express themselves without any restrictions and make individuals feel closer to the lives of its users. This research aims to understand the self-disclosure of account users on the social media platform TikTok through the lens of Symbolic interactionism theory. Symbolic interactionism, developed by Mead, is used as the theoretical framework to analyze how users interact and disclose themselves on TikTok. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to analyze the phenomenon of self-disclosure on TikTok. Data were obtained through observation and in-depth interviews with seven informants selected based on specific classifications. The results show that TikTok users tend to disclose their personal information openly to the public and within more limited private scopes. The findings also indicate a small aspect of the blind self, meaning that users are more aware of the information they disclose to others. This study is contribute to understanding the dynamics of interpersonal communication in the digital era and provide guidelines for the younger generation to use social media wisely. The findings offer insights Symbolic interactionism theory can be applied to analyze user behavior on social media
