Abstract

This study was motivated by the low writing proficiency of junior high school students and the need for more innovative learning media. The focus of this research is the effect of using ChatGPT on students’ English language acquisition, particularly their writing skills. The study aims to describe the improvement in language ability through key SLA concepts such as the Input Hypothesis, the Output Hypothesis, and the Affective Filter. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving a pre-test, post-test, observation, and triangulation to strengthen the findings. The results show an increase in the average score from 59.05 to 64.55, along with improvements in vocabulary use, grammatical accuracy, and textual coherence. These findings indicate that ChatGPT has a positive influence as a supportive medium for English language learning at the junior high school level.
