Abstract

This research examines how multiculturalism within the Chinese Canadian diaspora is portrayed in the film Turning Red, directed by Domee Shi. This coming-of-age film illustrates the dynamics of a Chinese Canadian diaspora family living within Canadian multiculturalism. The research employs Stuart Hall’s framework of Representation analysis; it uncovers, among other aspects, the patterns of relationships among characters in the Chinese Canadian diaspora family, particularly regarding the maintenance of cultural identity, adaptation to new surroundings, and cultural distinctions. The study aims to depict the representation of multiculturalism in the Chinese Canadian diaspora as illustrated in the film Turning Red. The findings indicate that Turning Red portrays the family relationship patterns and cultural dynamics of the Chinese Canadian diaspora; the mother is depicted as holding onto more of her original cultural values and traditions, the father figure is relatively new to the Asian culture, and the child is increasingly integrated into the surrounding culture, while also facing challenges in balancing Canadian culture with her heritage.
