Abstract

This study, entitled “The Impact of Parental Divorce on Children’s Perception of Family and Marriage”, This study aims to examine the influence of parental divorce on children’s perceptions of marriage and long-term commitment, as well as to identify the factors affecting children’s readiness to marry and build a family after parental divorce. This research employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with three adolescent respondents from divorced families. The findings indicate that parental divorce shapes a pessimistic view of marriage among children. Marriage is perceived as an institution that does not necessarily guarantee happiness and is vulnerable to conflict and divorce. Experiences of witnessing parental conflict, domestic violence, and separation lead to psychological impacts such as fear, doubt, and distrust toward long-term commitment. Factors influencing children’s attitudes toward marriage include the age at which the divorce occurred, the intensity of parental conflict, the quality of parental relationships after divorce, emotional support from family and the social environment, and the child’s coping abilities. This study concludes that parental divorce has a significant impact on children’s psychological well-being and their perceptions of marriage; however, these effects can be minimized through family support, a supportive environment, and the reinforcement of positive values regarding marriage.
