Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of varying hot press holding times on the mechanical and physical properties of cotton-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites. The hot press times used were 5 minutes (KWP 1), 7 minutes (KWP 2), and 9 minutes (KWP 3), with a composition of 70% polypropylene matrix and 30% cotton fabric. The composite fabrication process was carried out using the hot press method at a temperature of 160°C and constant pressure. Mechanical properties were tested using a tensile test in accordance with the ASTM D638 standard, while physical properties, including density, water absorption, and thickness swelling, were tested according to the JIS A 5908 standard. The results showed that varying hot press times affected the mechanical and physical properties of the composites. The highest tensile strength was achieved at 7 minutes of hot pressing, at 4.18 N/mm², while the highest tensile strain and modulus of elasticity were achieved at 5 minutes of hot pressing. The best physical properties were demonstrated by the composite with a 9-minute hot press time, characterized by the highest density of 1.25 g/cm³ and the lowest water absorption and thickness swelling values. It can be concluded that a 7-minute hot press time is the optimum condition for increasing tensile strength, while a 9-minute hot press time provides the best physical property stability.
