Abstract
The ability to read and write the Quran (BTQ) is a fundamental skill for every Muslim. The limitations in competence and time of parents in teaching BTQ have led to the emergence of learning alternatives through private teachers. This study aims to identify factors that become parental preferences in selecting private BTQ teachers and analyze parental perceptions regarding the impact of private BTQ learning on children's abilities. The study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design conducted in Kampung Malaka, Rorotan Village, North Jakarta from September to December 2025. Informants consist of five parents who have children aged 5-12 years and have been using private BTQ teacher services for at least 3 months, two private BTQ teachers, and one community leader. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. Research findings indicate that parental preferences are influenced by five main factors: (1) teacher qualifications and experience including educational background, teaching experience, and personal characteristics such as patience and firmness; (2) teaching methods evaluated through tangible results in children despite parents' lack of technical understanding of methods; (3) cost as an initial screening criterion, not the primary determinant; (4) time flexibility that enables integration with family routines; and (5) social recommendations from close networks as the main source of information. All parents have positive perceptions of the impact of private BTQ learning based on improvements in technical Quran reading abilities, changes in attitudes and better learning motivation, as well as follow-up impacts in the form of improved worship quality and development of children's religious character. The study concludes that parental preferences constitute a complex, multifactorial, and rational decision-making process oriented toward providing the best religious education according to family needs. Private BTQ learning is viewed as an effective long-term spiritual investment. Keywords: Parental Preferences, Private Teachers, Qur’an Literacy (BTQ), Private Learning, Islamic Education
