Abstract

Nurfadilah. NPM 41182911210004. The Role of Guidance and Counseling in Enhancing Students’ Multicultural Awareness at SMAN 1 Tambun Selatan. Islamic Religious Education Study Program, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Islam 45 Bekasi (2025/1447 H). This study aims to describe the role of guidance and counseling in enhancing students’ multicultural awareness at SMAN 1 Tambun Selatan, to explain students’ responses to these services, and to identify the challenges faced by guidance and counseling (BK) teachers. The background of the study arises from the cultural, religious, ethnic, and social diversity within the school, which potentially leads to intolerance, discrimination, and bullying. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the principal, BK teacher, Islamic Education teacher, and students. The findings reveal that BK teachers play a strategic role as facilitators, counselors, and initiators of activities that instill values of tolerance, mutual respect, and cooperation among students. Services were delivered through classical guidance, individual counseling, interactive activities such as role-playing, group discussions, and collaboration with subject teachers, particularly Islamic Education teachers. Students’ responses to these services were generally positive; they became more open-minded, respectful toward differences, and more mindful to avoid behaviors that could offend peers from different backgrounds. The challenges faced by BK teachers included significant differences in students’ backgrounds (including culture shock among students from Islamic boarding schools), limited service time, and students who were reluctant to share their problems openly.
