Abstract

This undergraduate thesis examines the politeness strategies employed by the main character, Ji-Yoon Kim, in the Netflix series The Chair, using the theoretical framework of Brown and Levinson (1987). This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach to examine how the main character constructs social and professional interactions through language, with data collected through dialogue transcription, then analyzed by representing. Based on the analysis of six episodes, a total of 78 politeness strategies were identified, including 22 Bald-on Record strategies, 30 Positive Politeness strategies, 21 Negative Politeness strategies, and 5 Off-Record strategies. The findings indicate that Positive Politeness is the most frequently used strategy, reflecting the character's efforts to build harmonious relationships by expressing praise, sympathy, and empathy. These strategies also serve to minimize face-threatening acts and reduce the potential for conflict within academic and social contexts. Overall, this research highlights the character’s communicative competence in navigating power dynamics and cultural expectations through the strategic use of politeness in professional discourse.
