Abstract

The existence of women smokers at this time is seen as a controversial issue in the social context. This phenomenon is further complicated when the act of smoking is practiced by hijab-wearing women, where now hijab-wearing women openly show this behavior in public spaces, including in an Islamic campus environment which is full of religious values. The purpose of this study is to investigate the subjective experiences and perceptions of hijab-wearing women towards the construction of their self-identity as smokers, how the process of forming representations of hijab- wearing women in smoking, as well as examining the responses of hijab-wearing women smokers regarding the views of their social environment. The method used to obtain research results is qualitative method and the theory of Peter L. Berger & Thomas Luckmann with a phenomenological approach. The findings of this study indicate that women hijab smokers interpret smoking as a coping mechanism for emotional pressure. The process of forming their self-representation goes through 3 stages namely externalization, objectification and internalization, where the results are influenced by the interaction between personal experience, community stigma and religious values. In addition, in responding to comments or social views from the Islamic campus community, the majority of informants respond by being ignorant and not caring about the views of people related to their habits.
