Abstract
Corrosion is one of the processes of material destruction, especially metal, due to the reaction of the metal with the surrounding environment, therefore materials made of metal or its alloys can be damaged by corrosion. Corrosion in ST 41 steel is usually caused by direct contact with the environment, either air or rainwater, the length of time of use, and the pH of the environment which is acidic. One thing that can be done is to carry out a coating process. This study was conducted to determine the effect of electroplating on ST-41 Steel using Ni and Cr. The electroplating process was carried out for the coating process, after the coating process, a potentiodynamic polarization test was carried out to determine the corrosion rate value of ST-41 steel without coating, and ST-41 steel coated with Ni, Cr, and Ni + Cr. From this study it is known that coating with the electroplating method can increase corrosion resistance in ST-41 steel. In conditions without coating, ST-41 steel has a corrosion rate value of 0.32234mm/year, while after being coated with nickel it has a corrosion rate value of 0.0008643mm/year, Cr coating changes the corrosion rate value to 0.006552mm/year, and Ni + Cr coating changes the corrosion rate value to 0.056844mm/year. This proves that the electroplating process can increase the corrosion resistance of steel. Coating with nickel produces higher corrosion resistance because of its nature which is more resistant to chemical reactions and forms a thicker layer when compared to other elements, thus protecting steel from corrosion.
