Abstract

The machining process used in the production process is in line with the development of science and technology, increasing production must be balanced with improving the quality of production results. The Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining process is a solution when the work process cannot be done using conventional machines. The results of this study are experimental research involving variations in cutting speed, namely the related variable of this study is the surface roughness of low carbon steel st 41 steel as a result of the process of CNC lathe FEELER- FTC10. The roughness is the result of the comparative average value of the cutting speed of 382, 1.401.3.184 m/min. The highest average value of cutting speed is 382 m/min with an average roughness value of 5,573 μm from a feeding speed of 23 mm/min. Meanwhile, to find out the roughness of the lowest value is at a speed of 3,184 m/min, the lowest average roughness value with a roughness value of 1,068 μm from the feeding speed of 159 mm/min, the turning process will produce ST 41 steel material to be smoother. The results of the study on the effect of cutting speed variations on the level of roughness of the steel surface on the results of the lathe process. then the greater the cutting speed, the lower the roughness value obtained if accompanied by a lower feeding speed. At the value of surface roughness from the cutting speed, this results in a better lathe process and efficiency in terms of workmanship and results, resulting in the best surface roughness value at 3,184 m/min with an average surface roughness value of 1,068 μm.
