Abstract

Women in movies are often positioned as second-class gender. Women are often depicted as male gaze and are never involved in decision-making, so their access to improving the quality of life is increasingly limited. This research aims to analyze the representation of feminism in the movie Little Women (2019). This research uses Stuart Hall's representation theory and Rosemarie Putnam Tong's feminist theory to see how feminism is depicted in the movie Little Women (2019) using representation analysis research methods. The research results show that in this movie adaptation, representations of feminism are presented on various issues such as gender equality, the relationship between women and men, gender inequality, and the ideal woman. The characters in this movie try to display feminist messages where the women depicted live their lives according to their respective dreams and aspirations. Therefore, movies and novels highlight the positive side of feminist aspirations while breaking negative stereotypes about women.
