Abstract

In the novel Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer, Rick Riordan creates a deuteragonist named Samirah al-Abbas, a mixed-race girl who is the daughter of an Arab-American Muslim doctor and a Norse god. This makes her circumstances peculiar, because Samirah not only has a cultural identity as an Arab-American woman, but also a Norse demigod. This research focuses on how Samirah al-Abbas's cultural identity is represented in the novel Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer. The method used in this research is intensive reading method, and the data used is taken from the novel Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. The results of this study shows that although Samirah Al-Abbas has two cultural identities that mirrors and works with each ther, but each side of community only admit their side when it comes to her. The Arab out of ignorance of her Norse side, and The Norse out of indifference to her Arab side.
