Abstract

Study abroad scholarships provide new experiences for anyone who receives them. Experiencing new things in an unfamiliar place is certainly a new challenge for those who are facing it. “Culture Shock” is the word most often used to describe their condition. Mental readiness to deal with environmental differences is needed to prevent symptoms of culture shock that can make it difficult for sufferers. Culture shock can occur in many aspects, knowing in advance the stages of culture shock will be a good preparation before facing a new culture. This study aims to determine the stages of culture shock experienced by IISMAVO 2022 scholarship recipients in South Korea and Taiwan, and how this culture shock experience affects their productivity. The approach used in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive type. Data collection was carried out by structural interviews. The data analysis method will be based on the Miles and Huberman model. From this study, researchers found that the most crucial phase in the cultural shock stage experienced by IISMAVO 2022 scholarship recipients is in the second phase or crisis phase. Differences in language, daily life, religion, food, and weather are the main problems for them. These differences create feelings of inferiority, homesickness, laziness to interact, and have the potential to reduce productivity. Emotional assistance from several parties is needed to help overcome the symptoms of culture shock and increase their productivity again.
