Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental period vulnerable to appearance dissatisfaction, which may increase the tendency toward body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Body image and self-acceptance are considered important factors associated with lower BDD tendencies. This study aimed to examine the relationship between body image and self-acceptance with the tendency toward body dysmorphic disorder among female adolescents. This study employed a quantitative correlational design. Participants were 172 female adolescents aged 15–18 years selected through cluster sampling. Data were collected using the Body Image Scale (30 items; validity = 0.271–0.688; reliability α = 0.864), Self-Acceptance Scale (22 items; validity = 0.302–0.563; reliability α = 0.822), and Body Dysmorphic Disorder Tendency Scale (12 items; validity = 0.311–0.690; reliability α = 0.786). Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation because the data were not normally distributed. The results showed a significant negative relationship between body image and the tendency toward body dysmorphic disorder (r = -0.691; p < 0.001), and a significant negative relationship between self-acceptance and the tendency toward body dysmorphic disorder (r = -0.639; p < 0.001). Therefore, the research hypotheses were accepted and the null hypotheses were rejected. Higher body image and self-acceptance were associated with lower tendencies toward body dysmorphic disorder among female adolescents.
