Abstract

Psychological pressure among emerging adults may reduce psychological well-being. Attachment to cats is considered an alternative source of emotional support besides human social support. This study aimed to examine the relationship between pet attachment and psychological well-being among emerging adults, with perceived social support serving as a mediator. This quantitative study using path analysis involved 226 cat-owning emerging adults aged 18-25 years with severe to extremely severe stress levels based on the stress dimension of the DASS (α = 0.775). The instruments used were Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale (α = 0.912), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; α = 0.876), and a Pet Attachment Scale (α = 0.921). The results showed that perceived social support did not mediate the relationship between pet attachment and psychological well-being. However, both variables independently contributed to psychological well-being.
