Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of morphological adaptation in Indonesian through the process of affixation involving the prefix di- and the confix di–...–in when added to English lexemes. The purpose of this study is to describe the affixation process, identify new meanings arising from the combination of the two linguistic systems, and determine whether there is a shift in word class after affixation. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, with documentation techniques through screenshots of posts from the X account @tanyakanrl, collected between October 29, 2023, until September 30, 2025. The data consisted of 35 items, classified into three categories: affixation that changed nouns into verbs, adjectives into verbs with the confix di-...-in, and verbs that remained verbs after affixation. An Indonesian-English bilingual dictionary was used as a tool to verify and interpret the lexical meaning of each data item. The results of the study show that the prefix di- and the confix di–...–in function productively in adapting English words into the Indonesian morphological system. The process of affixation often changes the grammatical class of words, especially changing English nouns and adjectives into verbs that fit Indonesian syntactic patterns. In addition, this morphological innovation demonstrates the adaptive nature of Indonesian speakers in integrating English elements into their linguistic repertoire.
