Abstract

This research is motivated by the low reading comprehension skills of elementary school students, which are indicated by limited reading interest, difficulty identifying main ideas, and the predominant use of conventional teaching methods. The theoretical review shows that the PQRST method (Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, Test) is effective in improving reading comprehension through systematic learning stages that emphasize students’ cognitive engagement. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by analysing 15 Google Scholar–indexed journals published between 2019 and 2025. Data collection was conducted through literature searching, selection based on inclusion criteria, critical appraisal using the CASP checklist, and data extraction related to research context, methods, and findings. The analysis reveals that the application of the PQRST method consistently enhances reading comprehension skills, as reflected in the improvement of average scores, mastery percentages, the ability to formulate 5W+1H questions, identify main ideas, and produce summaries. These improvements appear in both classroom action research and experimental studies. It is concluded that the PQRST method is an effective strategy for developing elementary students’ reading comprehension skills and is suitable as an interactive, systematic, and literacy-oriented learning alternative.
