Abstract
Welding is a metal joining process that is widely used in engineering applications, such as transportation structures, pressure vessels, steel frames, pipelines, bridges, shipbuilding, and heavy equipment. Welding defects may occur due to several factors, including insufficient knowledge in selecting electrode types, improper current and voltage settings, inadequate operator welding skills, and welding positions or techniques that affect the mechanical properties of the joint. This study aims to analyze Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) on ST-37 steel joints using variations of welding groove techniques, namely straight, zig-zag, and spiral grooves. The joint design used was a V-groove with a groove angle of 35° and a root face of 2 mm. The electrode used in this study was ER70S-6. The testing conducted in this research included impact testing. The results showed that the highest average impact strength was obtained from the zig-zag welding groove variation compared to the straight and spiral groove variations.
