Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model on the critical thinking skills of fifth grade students at SDN Tegal Benteng, especially in Science subjects. The PBL model was chosen because it is thought to be able to create a contextual, interactive learning atmosphere, and encourage students to be actively involved in the process of solving real problems related to everyday life. The research method used was quantitative method with pre-experimental approach and One Group Pretest-Posttest research design. The subjects in this study were all V grade students of SDN Tegal Benteng totaling 22 people, consisting of 10 male students and 12 female students. Data collection was carried out through critical thinking ability tests in the form of descriptions given before and after the application of the PBL learning model. The results of data analysis using the paired sample t-test showed a significant increase in students' critical thinking skills after the application of the PBL model, with a significance value of 0.000 (less than 0.05). The average student pretest score of 55.00 increased significantly to 89.18 during the posttest. In addition, the results of the N-Gain calculation analysis showed an average value of 0.776, which is in the high category. Total 72.7% of students experienced an increase in critical thinking skills in the high category, which shows the effectiveness of using PBL models in improving students' critical thinking skills. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Problem Based Learning model is very effective in the learning process of science at the elementary school level, especially in improving students' critical thinking skills.
