Abstract

This research discusses the meaning of metaphors that exist in a literary work, namely poetry, because it contains implied meanings to be known. This analysis aims to classify the types of metaphors found in William Blake's selected poems. Lakoff and Johnson explained that in finding the meaning of metaphor, there are three types: structural metaphor, orientational metaphor and ontological metaphor. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data sources obtained from Song of Innocence and Song of Experience are: A Poison Tree, Infant Joy, My Pretty Rose Tree,The Chimney Sweeper. The data were analysed using a language dictionary and,in particular, the author's cognitive background life story. The result of this research is that there are 17 data containing metaphorical expressions with the following details 9 structural metaphors, 4 orientational metaphors, 4 ontological metaphors. All these metaphorical expressions have different meanings, there are meanings that emphasise anger and hatred, sadness and downturn and hope and awakening. However, all of these meanings refer to the conditions during the Industrial Revolution in England.
