Abstract

This research is based on the fact that students' reading skills are quite good, the application of learning methods is not yet varied, and the facilities and infrastructure do not support learning activities. This research aims to determine the initial reading skills in the Indonesian language subject of grade 1 students at SD Negeri Aren Jaya XVIII Bekasi using the global method. This research is a type of quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The samples used were class 1 RA Kartini as the experimental class and class 1 Dewi Sartika as the control class with a total of 32 students in each class. The data collection technique uses a preliminary reading test instrument. The analysis used is descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis. Based on the results of descriptive data analysis, the average score for the two groups was obtained, namely the experimental class pre-test was 74.84 and post- test was 81.71, while in the control class the pre-test was 80.31 and the post-test was 81. 40. This means that for the experimental class there was an increase of 6.87, while for the control class there was an increase of 1.09. The results of hypothesis testing using the t-test were obtained at (13.463 > 2.042) at the significance level ɑ= 0.05. Because tcount > ttable, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, so it can be concluded that there is a difference in the average results of students' initial reading skills tests using the global method and the syllabic method for grade 1 students at SD Negeri Aren Jaya XVIII Bekasi, where the global method is higher. better than the syllable method in improving initial reading skills in grade 1 students at SD Negeri Aren Jaya XVIII Bekasi.
