Abstract
This researcher was motivated by the low initial reading skills Indonesian students of SDN Jaka Mulya I South Bekasi were still low. It can be seen that students have difficulty in distinguishing letters of the alphabet a-z sequentially or randomly, students have difficulty reading syllables, students have difficulty in reading simple words and students have difficulty reading simple sentences. The purpose of the study was to improve beginning reading skills through the global method of grade I students at SDN Jaka Mulya I. This research method uses Classroom Action Research (PTK) which consists of 3 (three) cycles. Each cycle is carried out in four stages, namely the stages of planning, implementation, action, and reflection. The number of students in the research class is 26 students, the number of female students is 12 and the number of male students is 14 students. Data collection techniques in this study used performance tests and observation. Based on the results of the study showed that classical completeness of class I increased from cycle to cycle III, initial reading skills in cycle I were 50% with an average value of 78. In cycle II classical completeness increased to 65% with an average value of 81. In cycle III classical completeness increased to 88% with an average value of 87. Thus, it can be concluded that the global method can improve beginning reading skills through the global method of grade I students at SDN Jaka Mulya I.
