Abstract

This research aims to analyze the hardness values of copper-based alloys produced through a stepwise sintering furnace process. The materials used in this research were Cu–Ni–Zn copper alloys with two different compositions, namely 49Cu–11Ni–Zn and 45Cu–2Ni–Zn. The sintering process was carried out using a conventional sintering furnace with a stepwise temperature profile of 800°C–970°C–800°C and a holding time of 30 minutes at the maximum temperature. The mechanical property evaluation was limited to hardness testing using the Vickers Hardness Test (HV) method in accordance with ASTM E92-17. The test results showed that the stepwise sintering furnace process was able to increase the hardness values of both materials compared to their raw material conditions. The hardness of the 49Cu–11Ni–Zn alloy increased from 225.6 HV to 268.6 HV, while the hardness of the 45Cu–2Ni–Zn alloy increased from 189.8 HV to 280.2 HV. The results also indicated that although the 45Cu–2Ni–Zn copper alloy has a lower nickel content than the 49Cu–11Ni–Zn copper alloy, its final hardness after the sintering process was higher. This suggests that, in addition to material composition, the stepwise sintering furnace parameters—particularly temperature control and holding time—play an important role in determining the final hardness of copper-based alloys. Based on these results, the 45Cu–2Ni–Zn copper alloy is considered the more optimal material in terms of hardness under the sintering parameters applied in this study. Keywords: Copper Alloy, Stepwise Sintering Furnace, Hardness, Vickers Hardness Test, Holding Time.
