Abstract

This research studies the features of female language used by the main female character in the novel “The Poppy War” by R.F. Kuang published in 2018. The method used is descriptive qualitative approach. The purpose of this study is to determine the types of language features that occur in the novel The Poppy War. The theory used as a reference in this study is the theory of Lakoff (1975) which includes 10 female language features, namely hedges, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, precise color terms, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. From the results of the research, 102 data were found that used female language features. The data includes 8 out of 10 female language features, namely hedges (26), tag questions (12), rising intonation (14), intensifiers (25), hypercorrect grammar (8), superpolite forms (7), avoidance of strong swear words (2), and emphatic stress (8). Therefore, only precise color terms and empty adjectives are not found in the novel The Poppy War.
