Abstract
This study aims to determine the impact of board of directors characteristics on company performance. The independent variables used in this research are board of directors size and education. Meanwhile, sustainable growth rate (SGR) and sustainability performance were used as dependent variables. The secondary data used in this descriptive quantitative study is collected from company sustainability report and annual report. Research data was obtained from the official website of each company and the official IDX website at www.idx.co.id. A total of 90 samples from 40 companies in the basic materials sector listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the 2020-2022 period were selected using the purposive sampling method. The influence of board of directors characteristics on company performance was analysed through ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analysis using Stata version 17. Based on the results, this study found that board of directors size has a positive and significant effect on company performance which proxide by SGR and sustainability performance. It also found that board of directors education has a positive and significant effect on company performance proxide by sustainability performance, but has no effect on company performance proxide by SGR. Firm size has a negative and significant effect on company performance which proxide by SGR and has no effect on sustainability performance. Firm age has no effect on company performance which proxide by SGR and sustainability performance. Profitability has a positive and significant effect on company performance proxide by SGR and has no effect on sustainability performance. Leverage has no effect on company performance which proxide by SGR and sustainability performance.
