Abstract

The development of science and technology has driven an increase in demand for composite materials, especially in the industrial sector. Composite materials are a combination of two or more forming materials through mixing or combining, where each material has different properties and supports each other so that it becomes a strong material. However, over time natural fibers are used more often because they are more environmentally friendly and can reduce production costs compared to using synthetic fibers. So in this final project, pineapple fiber is used because it is abundant, environmentally friendly, can be recycled, and is cheap. This research was conducted to determine the effect of woven fiber direction of pineapple leaf fiber composite with an unsaturated polyester resin matrix on impact strength and microstructure. In making this composite, a Yukalac 157 BTQN-EX type matrix was used using the hand lay-up method, where previously the pineapple leaf fiber or reinforcement was soaked for 60 minutes using 5% NaOH. In this study, there are 3 variable directions for woven fiber, namely 45°/90°, 0°/45° and 0°/90°. The highest impact strength was obtained in the 0°/90° woven fiber direction of 5.897 (Kj/m²) and the absorption energy was 0.3036 Joules. The results of micro testing can be seen that the composite has defects such as fiber pull outs, voids and cracks in the matrix which provides an understanding of the quality and performance of the composite. Fiber pull out occurs because the fiber and matrix bonds are not strong enough, this causes the fibers to appear to come out after the impact test. This void occurs when air bubbles are trapped in the specimen. Voids are formed in the specimen because the hand lay up method is used when pouring the resin into the composite mold. Cracks in the resin after impact testing are caused by the resin having brittle properties.
