Abstract
At this time, the development and modern technology are very rapid. So it requires development in finding alternative materials to replace hard-to-obtain materials with materials that are easy to obtain and environmentally friendly. One of the natural fibers that is the object of this research is pineapple leaf fiber. Pineapple fiber is used because it has several advantages, namely abundant amount, renewable, light density, low price, biodegradable in nature, recyclable, not harmful to health, and environmentally friendly. This study was conducted to determine the influence of pineapple leaf fiber composite structural laminate on impact strength and microstructure. The composite uses BQTN 157 polyester matrix by hand lay-up method with the research object in the form of pineapple leaf fiber composite with an immersion time of 1 hour and with 5% NaOH. The research variables were fiber direction 0º/45º, 45º/90º, 0º/90º. The highest impact strength was found in the variation in fiber direction of 0º/90º with an average impact strength value of 5.466 (kj/m²) and an absorption energy value of 0.2686 joules. The results of microphotos on the fracture cross-section of composite specimens after impact testing show that fiber pull out, void, and rich matrix often occur. Voids or air bubbles occur due to the process of making composite specimens using the hand lay up technique, air bubbles that are trapped in the composite board. Fiber pull out occurs because the fibers occur because the fibers do not fuse perfectly with the resin, which results in the fibers appearing to hang out after impact testing.
