Abstract

This thesis analyzes the translation of slang in the novel Without Merit by Coolen Hoover. This study deals with the equivalent and translation strategy applied to slang translation. There are 2 objectives that will be discussed in analyzing the equivalence of slang meanings and how to translate strategies into the targeted language. 1) to find out the equivalent of Indonesian translation in slang in the slang category, namely clippings, metaphors, previously used words, and acronyms. 2) to find the translation strategy applied in translating slang which is categorized by types of translation, namely communicative translation, cultural transplantation, and kalke. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. Sources of data in this study are slang expressions contained in the novel Without Merit and its translation in Indonesian. The theories needed for this thesis are taken from various books related to translation studies. Thus, the theories used in this research are theories from experts in the field of translation. In this analysis, the researcher found two results. The results of the first analysis show that dynamic equivalence is the most widely used equivalence in translating slang. There are 35 data which are considered as dynamic equivalence and 32 data which are considered as formal equivalence. The results of the second analysis show that the translation strategy that is often used to translate slang is communicative translation. In total there are 35 data for communicative translation, 31 data for kalke and 1 data for cultural transplantation. It can be concluded that in translating a slang, the equivalent meaning applied must be adjusted to the equivalent meaning of SL and TL, with the steps of the translation strategy that has been applied by linguistic experts in order to produce good and acceptable translation results.
