Abstract

A solar water heater or solar water heater is a device used to heat water by utilizing solar power. The collector plays an important role because it functions as an absorber of the solar radiation and converts it into heat energy. One of the factors that affect the efficiency of the collector is the cover glass. The cover that will be used on the solar collector is transparent glass with varying thickness of glass. This study aims to determine how much efficiency solar water heater is affected by variations in the thickness of the cover glass. Collector measurements were carried out on March 6, 2022, with variations in cover glass thickness of 5 mm, 8 mm, 12 mm, by measuring ambient temperature, glass temperature, plate temperature, water temperature, and sun intensity according to the specified time. The results of the measurement the average efficiency values of the cover glass thickness of 5 mm, 8 mm and 12 mm were 53.46 %, 49.07 % and 45.41 %. The difference in thickness has a significant influence on the efficiency of the water heater collector. Where the difference in thickness from 5 mm to 8 mm decreased efficiency by 8.21 %, from 8 mm to 12 mm decreased efficiency by 7.45 %, and from 5 mm to 12 mm decreased efficiency by 15.06 %. The highest efficiency value among the three cover glass thicknesses is found in the heating collector with a cover glass thickness of 5 mm with a value of 53,46 %.
