Abstract

ANALYSIS THE EFFECT OF VARIATIONS OF CURRENT VARIATION AND TRAVELLING SPEED ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND MICRO STRUCTURES ON WELDING COPPER(Cu) MATERIALS USING THE GTAW METHOD The welding process is used in joining materials that provide a lighter joint weight than joining metal by means of rivets or bolt nuts. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is an arc welding process that uses an arc between a tungsten electrode (non-consumable) and a welding point. This process is used with gas protection and without the application of pressure. This process can be used with or without the addition of filler metal. GTAW has become indispensable as a tool for many industries due to its high quality weld results and low equipment costs. This was research, the GTAW method of welding on copper material by varying the current strength and traveling speed in the welding process. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of variations in current strength and traveling speed on the results of the mechanical properties and microstructure of the copper material that has been welded. After the welding process, the Non Destructive Penetrant Test was carried out to determine the physical results of the welding using the variations in current strength and traveling speed, then hardness testing with Brinell and metallography with an optical microscope. The test results are obtained : (1) Penetrant Testing Testing shows that there is no identification of defects in all test specimen results. (2) The brinell hardness test results in an increase in the hardness value in the HAZ and Weld Metal areas. (3) The microstructure pattern in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding in variations in current strength and traveling speed is different from the Weld Metal area. (4) Observations of mechanical tests and physical tests (microstructure) differ in results between welding variations in current strength and traveling speed.
