Abstract

The need for environmentally friendly and renewable sources of electrical energy is increasing along with the depletion of fossil fuel reserves. Galvanic cells (voltaic cells) are one of the technologies that can convert chemical energy into electrical energy directly and considered more environmentally friendly. The performance of galvanic cells is largely determined by the electrode material used, especially the anode. Aluminum (Al) and magnesium (Mg) are two metals that are abundant, relatively inexpensive, and have very negative standard reduction potentials, making them potential to be used as sacrificial anodes in galvanic cells. This study aims to conduct an experimental study and analyze the comparative performance of aluminum (Al) and magnesium (Mg) when used as anodes in a galvanic cell circuit to produce alternative electrical energy. The research method used is a laboratory experiment. The galvanic cell is designed using aluminum and magnesium as anodes alternately, magnesium as a cathode, and salt water solution (NaCl) as an electrolyte. Testing includes measuring the voltage (V) and the duration of the lamp light produced by both cell configurations. The results of the study showed that a galvanic cell using aluminum as the anode was able to light a lamp longer than one using magnesium. In the first experiment, using magnesium as the anode produced a voltage of 1.689 V and was able to light the lamp for 120 hours. In the second experiment, using aluminum produced a voltage of 1.478 V and was able to light the lamp for 130 hours.
