Abstract

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and express emotions adaptively. During adolescence, emotional intelligence is influenced by various factors, including parental attachment and self-compassion. This study aimed to examine the relationship between parental attachment and self-compassion with emotional intelligence among students at SMA X. A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 190 tenth- and eleventh-grade students selected through probability sampling using a cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected using the Emotional Intelligence Scale (α = 0.878), a modified Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) (α = 0.936), and the Self-Compassion Scale (α = 0.872). Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation and multiple linear regression. The results indicated a positive and significant relationship between parental attachment and emotional intelligence (r = 0.167, p = 0.021) and between self-compassion and emotional intelligence (r = 0.283, p = 0.000). Furthermore, parental attachment and self-compassion jointly had a significant effect on emotional intelligence (F(2,187) = 9.469, p = 0.000, R² = 0.092). These findings suggest that higher parental attachment and self-compassion are associated with higher emotional intelligence among adolescents.
