Abstract

This research is motivated by the sandwich generation phenomenon in Bekasi City, where individuals face dual economic burdens and emotional pressures in supporting both aging parents and their nuclear families. This study aims to examine family communication patterns among the sandwich generation in Bekasi City. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were gathered through observation and in-depth interviews with three sandwich generation informants and one key informant. Data analysis followed reduction, display, and conclusion drawing techniques based on McLeod and Chaffee’s theory. The findings reveal that social orientation dominates family communication, characterized by high obedience and respect for parents to maintain harmony. The protective communication pattern is the most prevalent, especially regarding major decisions and economic-health issues, where parents retain primary authority. The study concludes that the sandwich generation’s economic power does not automatically shift parental authority. Cultural values, religious beliefs, and filial piety remains the primary factors shaping their family communication patterns.
