Abstract

Early reading skills are a fundamental skill that elementary school students must master as a foundation for developing literacy skills. However, various studies indicate that elementary school students' early reading skills are still suboptimal. Common problems include difficulty recognizing and distinguishing letters, especially those with similar shapes, difficulty composing syllables into words, and halting and less fluent reading. This situation is also influenced by the lack of engaging learning media tailored to the characteristics of lower-grade students. This study aims to analyze the application of visual media to elementary school students' early reading skills. The research method used was a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which examined national journal articles relevant to the research topic. Data collection was conducted through Google Scholar using keywords such as "visual media," "beginning reading," "Indonesian," and "elementary school students." The journals analyzed were limited to publications published between 2019 and 2025, involving elementary school students. Based on these criteria, 15 journal articles were selected for systematic analysis. Through visual media, students more easily understand the relationship between letters, sounds, and word meanings, thus developing their ability to recognize letters, read syllables, words, and even simple sentences. Furthermore, visual media also helps improve reading fluency, pronunciation accuracy, and the use of appropriate intonation. Therefore, visual media can be presented as an effective alternative learning medium to support the development of early reading skills in early elementary school students. Keywords: visual media, early reading, reading ability.
