Abstract

This research, focused on understanding mathematical concepts, is based on the observation that elementary school students' understanding of mathematical concepts is still inadequate. This is evident in students who still have difficulty grasping main ideas, applying these concepts in various situations, and are unable to solve problems that require deeper conceptual understanding. The purpose of this study was to improve the understanding of mathematical concepts in fourth-grade students at SDN Srijaya 03 through the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two rounds, with fourth-grade students as the subjects. Each round included four steps: designing, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Data collection was conducted using a test technique. The success of this research was determined by the achievement of 85% of the total students at least 75 points. Based on the findings from each round, the class completion percentage showed an increase. In the first round, the classical completeness reached 50% with an average score of 69. In the second round, there was a jump of 45% to 95% with an average score of 84. The increase in the percentage of understanding of mathematical concepts from the first round to the second round was 45%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model is able to boost the understanding of mathematical concepts of fourth-grade students at SDN Srijaya 03.
