Abstract
Users create virtual identities as K-pop idols and interact with one another through roleplayer accounts, forming a unique and distinct space for communication. This phenomenon is worth examining as it reflects the processes of meaning-making, identity formation, and social dynamics that occur in virtual environments. This study aims to understand the patterns of social interaction among K-pop idol roleplayers on Facebook using George Herbert Mead’s theory of Mind, Self, and Society. The research applies a qualitative approach with in-depth interview techniques involving two active informants: Wilhemina and Theressa. The findings indicate that interactions within the roleplay world involve aspects of mind (symbolic thinking through captions, emojis, and language style), self (identity formation influenced by community norms and personal preferences), and society (social structures within the community such as agency, team, dorm, as well as norms and social sanctions). These interactions also affect the informants’ personalities and communication patterns in real life. In conclusion, the roleplay world on Facebook creates a complex and meaningful symbolic space, strengthening the symbolic interactionism theory within online community contexts. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for future research on social interaction patterns among Kpop idol roleplayers on social media. Future researchers are encouraged to increase the number of informants and consider using platforms other than Facebook to obtain more diverse and relevant data.
