Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of gender performativity in the video games Bayonetta (2009) and Bayonetta 2 (2014). The aim of this research is to show that the identity contruction of Bayonetta and Luka in the Bayonetta series is related to issues of gender performativity. As a basis of my research, I used the gender performativity theory presented by Judith Butler, which states that gender is performative and a social construct. The reason this research was conducted was to provide an example of analysis of individuals’ gender identity construction by repeatedly performing gendered actions. In this research, I analyzed the gender performativity carried out by Bayonetta and Luka based on several aspects such as appearance, way of speaking and behavior, as well as relationships with other characters. The results show that Bayonetta and Luka perform gender in ways that both follow and challenge traditional gender norms that exist within a heteronormative society through performing both feminine and masculine actions. This shows that gender identity is performative and fluid.
