Abstract

This research was motivated by the problem of the low initial reading ability of class I A students at SDN Ciketing Udik IV Bantargebang. The problems are: 1) Lack of students' ability to recognize letter shapes, 2) Students are only able to pronounce letter sounds, 3) Lack of students' ability to read syllables, 4) Students' lack of ability to read a word, 5) Lack of students' ability to read a sentence. In overcoming this problem, it is necessary to apply the Syllable (Silaba) learning method which aims to improve the reading ability at the beginning of class I A at SDN Ciketing Udik IV Bantargebang. The research method used is Classroom Action Research (PTK) which consists of two cycles, with 22 students as subjects and each cycle consists of two meetings. And each cycle includes four stages consisting of action planning, action implementation, observation and reflection. This data collection uses collection techniques in the form of oral tests and observations. The success criteria in this research is 80% with a predetermined KKM value of 76. Based on the research results from each cycle, the classical percentage increase was obtained, in cycle I activities it was 63% with an average of 84 and in cycle II it was 86% with average 90. The cycle will be terminated if the student has achieved the target classical completeness score of 80% in the Indonesian language subject class I A SDN Ciketing Udik IV Bantargebang using the Syllable (Silaba) method. Thus it can be concluded that the syllable learning method (silaba) can improve the beginning reading ability of class I A students at SDN Ciketing Udik IV.
