Abstract

The high number of autistic children in Indonesia, according to the Statistics Information Center for Special Schools, has reached 144,102 students. In this case the role of parents in providing proper care is needed. In parenting there are communication patterns that exist between parents and their autistic children, one of the factors that influence this is their socioeconomic status. This study aims to find out the communication patterns used by parents in caring for their autistic children based on their socioeconomic status. In this study using a qualitative descriptive method with the stages of observation, interviews and documentation. From the results of a review of the theory of parental communication patterns based on (Gunawan 2013), it was found that there are three communication patterns used by parents in raising their autistic children, namely Authoritarian (Tends to be hostile), Permissive (tends to behave freely), Authoritative (tends to avoid anxiety and chaos). Economic factors also underlie the use of the three communication patterns in terms of supporting needs and facilities in caring for their autistic children.
