Abstract

The braking system has two important components, namely a disc that rotates according to the speed of the wheels and a brake lining that will inhibit the speed of the vehicle. The two components will rub against each other which will then cause the coefficient of friction and wear. This in a certain period of time will experience an increase in wear with a decrease in the coefficient of friction which will cause both braking components to experience a decrease in the quality of the braking system. This study will analyze tribological properties including roughness, wear mass and friction coefficient test results on original discs on 2000 cc manual transmission cars. The discs used are original used without treatment (TP), lathe marks (B) and grinding marks (G). This study aims to develop quality on used lathe treated discs with the results of grinding treatment. Based on the overall results of pre-treatment testing obtained results on used products without treatment (TP) (with an average roughness result of 17.915 μm). Then the used product from lathe treatment (B) (with an average roughness result of 9.561 μm). And the lowest in used products from grinding treatment (G) which is smoothed using sandpaper in the results has the lowest roughness level compared to lathe products (B) so that it has the best roughness level (with an average roughness of 3.738 μm) which is close to the roughness level of disc brakes with a standard value of 0.534 ±0.04 μm. And has a thickness value of 20.05 mm which is still above the standard thickness value at Disc brake with a value of 11.04±11.05 mm so that it is still suitable for use and treatment is carried out on the surface of the disc that is in direct contact with the brake lining. It is the effect of grinding treatment that becomes the most positive for the treatment of disc surfaces. Keywords: Disc, roughness, wear and friction coefficient.
