Abstract

This study employed contextual semantic meaning analysis to examine the sorts of taboo words used in the film Sausage Party and to determine the function of their use. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods and data analysis based on the theory of Timothy Jay and Rothwell. The data of this research are taboo sentences contained in the movie script. The results showed that the number of taboo words in the film Sausage Party was 81 words, and the number of sentences containing taboo words was 275 sentences. The types of taboo words contained in this film are the categories of Insult and Slurs, Slang, Vulgarity, Epithets, Profanity, Obscenity, Cursing, Scatology, and Blasphemy. While the functions of using taboo words contained in this film are To Provide Catharsis category with 112 sentences, To Create Personal Identification category with 53 sentences, To Create Attention category with 51 sentences, To Discredit Someone or Others category with 30 sentences, and To Provoke category with 29 sentences.
