Abstract

This study was motivated by the low reading fluency skills of second-grade students at SDN Aren Jaya I. Preliminary observations indicated that many students still read haltingly, had difficulty pronouncing words accurately, and were unable to use appropriate intonation and reading fluency. Based on these problems, this study aimed to improve the reading fluency skills of second-grade students at SDN Aren Jaya I through the implementation of the Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) Model. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The participants were 33 second-grade students at SDN Aren Jaya I. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation. The research instruments included teacher activity observation sheets, reading fluency tests, and documentation. The criterion for success was achieved when at least 80% of the students obtained a score of 85 or higher. The results of the study showed that the implementation of the Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) Model was able to improve students' reading fluency. The average reading fluency score increased by 9 points, from 79 in Cycle I to 88 in Cycle II, while classical learning mastery increased by 21%, from 67% in Cycle I to 88% in Cycle II. Improvements were also observed in each reading fluency indicator. Reading accuracy and reading rate each increased by 7 points, from 87 in Cycle I to 94 in Cycle II, while prosody increased by 7 points, from 63 in Cycle I to 70 in Cycle II. Teacher performance during the learning process also improved in each cycle. Therefore, the implementation of the Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) Model successfully improved the reading fluency of second-grade students at SDN Aren Jaya I.
